Fitness centers vary widely, from large open-ceilinged buildings to smaller rooms in hotels or schools. They include gymnasiums, natatoriums, group classes, and more. Each room type has unique design requirements to ensure a comfortable and healthy space.
Powering Through Flow
- Fitness centers have frequently changing occupancy levels as well as unique high-moisture areas like saunas, pools, and locker rooms. It’s important to control air pressure between various spaces to manage odors and airflow. Additionally, gyms with higher ceilings must thoroughly mix the air to ensure even distribution and comfort in the space.
High Performance Design
- Common design targets include temperatures between 68-72°F and humidity levels below 50%. Managing humidity is crucial, especially in humid environments like gyms with wood floors, which may require specialized systems to reduce dew points. High-Volume Low-Speed (HVLS) fans effectively prevent stale air by continuously circulating the air and reducing stratification. Maintaining slightly positive pressure in most areas and negative pressure in spaces like locker rooms helps maintain good air quality.
No Sweat Comfort
- CaptiveAire offers a complete fitness center solution, including HVAC, exhaust fans, HVLS fans, ducts, and remote monitoring. Paragon HVAC systems with modulating compressors and direct drive fans exceed ASHRAE 90.1 efficiency standards, provide excellent humidity/temperature control, and monitor CO2 for optimal comfort and indoor air quality. HVLS fans enhance comfort during high activity periods. Custom control sequences are designed in-house for various environments, and post-install performance reviews optimize systems. CASLink remote monitoring reduces downtime by allowing operators to adjust settings without service visits.

ASHRAE 62.1 defines the minimum outside air requirement of 0.06 CFM/ft2 + 20 CFM per person. When dealing with locker rooms, gymnasiums, natatoriums, or laundry rooms – increased ventilation rates will apply.
